When Jesus Christ was in His hometown of Nazareth, He went into the synagogue and unrolled the scroll of Isaiah and read the following words, "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners." (Isaiah 61:1-2 NASB).

These two verses hold keys for our abundant life.  The Gospel is not only about the forgiveness of our sins, many of us stopped at the cross and never realized the full extent of the promise.  The abundant life Jesus talked about is found in our identity in Christ, and is experienced through the indwelling of His Spirit.  He gives us freedom from what chains us down.  He opens our eyes to truth.  He releases us from spiritual oppression.  He guides us to walk free and whole as a vessel of God’s glory.

After years working with clients and discipling in the church, I came to realize that many of us don't know exactly how we are still held captive to destructive thought patterns.  We don't know our worth in Christ or how infinitely and recklessly we are loved by the Father. We don’t understand how our past is impacting our present.  By nature of deception, we don't know how we are being deceived into believing and behaving in ways that are harming ourselves and our loved ones.
